The Neuroscience of Meditation, Mindfulness, and Compassion

In times of stress, anxiety, and isolation finding effective strategies to understand our emotions and how we relate to the world at large often brings comfort. Mindfulness, meditation, and compassion have long been championed as helpful strategies but how do they impact our well being, if at all? Fadel Zeidan joins William Mobley to discuss his work applying scientific methods to these practices to quantify and discover how and why they work. [Show ID: 35824]

.b Beditation by MiSP

Have a go at this practice to see for yourself how mindfulness works. Learn how kindness and patience are needed to train the mind.

Beditation is the 3rd of 8 animations by Mindfulness in Schools Project (MiSP – https://mindfulnessinschools.org/) to support the .b course (https://mindfulnessinschools.org/what-is-b/b-curriculum/) for 11 to 18 year-olds.

.b is a classroom-based course first conceived in 2008. Since then it has been constantly evolving in response to feedback from both students and teachers. These animations are designed to support
students with their home practice after each classroom lesson. They are freely available on http://www.dotbe.org/

MiSP is a registered charity whose aim is to bring mindfulness to young people and those who care for them. Key to our vision is that the quality of our teaching materials and the training of those who
deliver them in the classroom is of the highest standard. Our courses can only be taught in schools by MiSP-trained teachers (https://mindfulnessinschools.org/courses/) who have an established mindfulness practice.

MiSP would like to thank animator Martin Pickles (http://martinpickles.com/) for his outstanding work. Many thanks also to Tom Lowe (http://lowe-frequency.co.uk/) for the sound design, Tanera Dawkins (http://www.taneradawkins.com/TANWEBSITE2.swf) for the music, and Niamh Bruce (https://www.sanctuary.ie/facilitators/niamh-bruce/) for her voice. Don’t try to be mindful | Daron Larson | TEDxColumbus

Don’t try to be mindful | Daron Larson | TEDxColumbus

Mindful Awareness Trainer Daron Larson says although mindfulness has been shown to help decrease stress and increase contentment, many who try it give up convinced they’re doing it wrong. Drawing from his daily practice since 2002, he helps people break through common obstacles and devises ways to address attention-related challenges everyone faces. Daron compares mindfulness practice to physical fitness to help distinguish the benefits from the exercises required to experience them. Just as regular exercise can improve your physical well-being, he argues that training your attention can transform the way you navigate the challenges of everyday life.

Daron Larson helps people feel more at home in their lives by encouraging them to habitually notice ordinary experiences in liberating ways. He has been practicing mindfulness daily to disrupt his own default narrative mode since his first silent meditation retreat in October 2002. He teaches mindfulness practice as attention training, using the challenges and benefits of physical fitness to help navigate similar aspects of developing attentional skills.

He reveals some of the amazing benefits being mindful can bring to the classroom and inspires the audience with simple ways to bring more awareness to how we respond to our everyday experiences.

The Problem With Headspace, Calm, and All Those Meditation Apps // Meditation has become a multi-billion dollar industry in the U.S., but how well do some of the most popular meditation apps actually work? It depends who you ask. If you’re serious about learning meditation or stepping up your practice, watch this video. We’ll be discussing five problematic trends with most meditation apps on the market – PLUS, an app that I think is an exception to the rule.

Time Stamps:
0:00 – Intro (what was going to be a calm or headspace app review)
1:48 – #1: Too much focus on self-improvement
3:27 – #2: Promotion of spiritual materialism
4:49 – #3: Venture-backed (means different incentives)
7:08 – #4: Unethical practices in the name of growth
8:54 – #5: Lack of training for insight
10:50 – The only app I would recommend: Waking Up with Sam Harris
14:03 – Closing thoughts
